Your mission

We are looking for a Senior Database Engineer, specializing in Hadoop to join our Database Services team.

The successful candidate will be part of an international organization working with an array of database platforms and applications. You will be responsible for ensuring the performance, availability, and security of Hadoop clusters. 

You will also be responsible for orchestrating upgrades, backups, and provisioning of software and clusters, as well as upskilling team members in Hadoop.

It is a challenging role within a rapidly expanding company with a great work ethos who value and develop their employees.

What you'll do

  • Design, deploy and support highly available and scalable Hadoop Clusters for high data volumes
  • Monitor and maintain system capacity within the Hadoop clusters
  • Provide support for Hadoop clusters from development through to production
  • Provide out of hours production support as part of a follow-the-sun on-call rota.
  • Ensure performance, security, and availability of mission critical data
  • Handle common database procedures such as upgrade, backup, recovery, migration, deployment etc.
  • Prepare crystal clear documentation and specifications, including database design, coding & security standards, best practices, standard operating procedures and training materials
  • Work closely with colleagues in Database Services and application development teams, and with business stakeholders.
  • Cross train peers in Hadoop administration.
  • Coordinate deliverables within a multi-discipline database team

What you'll bring

  • 3+ years experience with Hadoop architecture and administration on Linux
  • Knowledge of:
    • HDFS
    • YARN
    • Hive
    • Kafka
    • Zookeeper
    • Kerberos
    • Ranger
    • Knox
    • Automation tools (Puppet, Ansible, etc)
    • Code versioning tools (GIT, SVN, etc)
    • Scripting languages or programming frameworks (Bash, Python, Java, etc)
  • Non-technical:
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to lead the technical direction
    • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills
    • Open minded, willing to share knowledge and learn new skills
    • Passion for current industry standards and best practices
  • Experience of the following would be useful but is not essential:
    • Containerisation (Docker/ Kubernetes)
    • System admin and tuning of Linux based servers
    • MySQL/Cassandra/ElasticSearch Database administration
    • Cloud platform solutions (AWS/GCP/Azure)
