Your mission

The Workshop are looking for a Senior Database Engineer with hands-on experience in both the development and administration of NoSQL Data Platforms and a passion for automation. 

You will be working on highly transactional systems, including those in the blockchain space. We work in the Cloud and on-premise and encourage automation and dynamic scaling solutions. You will be passionate about databases and keen to become one of our NoSQL SMEs.

Database Services are a team of 15 database specialists based in the UK, Spain and New Zealand. We educate, guide and contribute to the development and operation of best practice and best value data platforms. 

We support a wide range of technologies including MySQL, Postgres, SQL Server, Cassandra, Elastic Search, Mongodb, Hadoop and regularly evaluate new technologies. As a team of specialists, we provide the tools and time for learning as well as a personal training budget.

What you'll do

  • Provide specialist database input into project feasibility, design and development so that the products we build are robust, scalable, supportable and secure
  • Promote and collaborate in the creation of solutions to drive automation, environmental consistency, continuous delivery and an "everything as code" mentality
  • When appropriate lead on complex database coding such as Information Lifecycle Management, complex schema modifications, advanced tuning and migrations
  • Administer our database platforms to ensure they remain online, secure, right-sized and have appropriate HADR solutions. This includes joining an on-call rota
  • Collaborate in the provision of product setup and operating documentation for our clients IT support teams
  • Contribute to the definition and management of our products data lifecycle 
  • Keep up to date, and sometimes drive industry data platform trends and technology use
  • Collaborate with colleagues, application development teams, and with business stakeholders.
  • Crosstrain peers in database development and administration. They will do the same for you.

What you'll bring

  • Demonstrated seniority and overall IT experience
  • 4+ years’ experience in the following (training or certification would be a plus):
    • Administration including On-call support for 24/7 mission critical systems
    • Design and tuning of Cassandra databases
    • Designing and provisioning HADR solutions
    • The ability to perform code reviews
    • Schema Design
    • Performance Tuning
    • Working with Linux
  • Knowledge of:
    • Automation tools (Puppet, Ansible, etc)
    • Code versioning tools (GIT, SVN, etc)
    • At least one scripting/programming language (e.g. Bash, Python, Java, etc)
    • Working with Elastic and/or MongoDB
  • Non-technical:
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team
    • As a database SME comfortable preparing and running demo’s and learning sessions for small groups of fellow engineers
    • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills
    • Open minded, willing to share knowledge and learn new skills
    • Passionate about data platforms – keep up to date on the industry and best practices and keen to develop into an broaden knowledge into multiple data platforms.
  • Experience of the following would be useful but is not essential:
    • GCP
    • System admin and tuning of Linux based servers
    • Containerisation (Docker/ Kubernetes)
    • Experience of supporting high transactional and/or financial systems
    • Experience of agile working and exposure to Jira and Confluence
