What you'll do

You will be a Cassandra Database Administrator working in our global Database Services team. You will be part of a large multi-international organisation, working with an array of database platforms and applications. You will be responsible for ensuring the performance, availability, and security of Cassandra clusters.  You will also be responsible for orchestrating upgrades, backups, and provisioning of database instances. It is a challenging role within a rapidly expanding company with a great work ethos who value and develop their employees. Cassandra is a core technology for our product suite and you will be working on highly transactional systems, including those in the blockchain space. We work in the Cloud and on premise and encourage automation and dynamic scaling solutions. You will be passionate about databases and keen to become one of our Cassandra SMEs.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Design, deploy and support highly available and scalable distributed Cassandra databases for high volume transactions
  • Maintain and develop data models, structures, and procedures to ensure the integrity of all database components
  • Provide support for Cassandra databases from development through to production
  • Provide out of hours production support as part of an on-call rota.
  • Ensure performance, security, and availability of mission critical databases
  • Set up replication across multiple geographically stretched data centers
  • Handle common database procedures such as upgrade, backup, recovery, migration, deployment etc.
  • Prepare crystal clear documentation and specifications, including database design and coding standards, best practices, standard operating procedures and training materials
  • Work closely with colleagues in Database Services and application development teams, and with business stakeholders.
  • Cross train peers in Cassandra database development and administration.

 What you'll bring

  • Demonstrated seniority and overall IT experience
  • Experience in the following (training or certification would be a plus):
    • In depth knowledge of Cassandra architecture and administration
    • Design and tuning of Cassandra databases
    • Use of Linux
  • Knowledge of:
    • Automation tools (Puppet, Ansible, etc)
    • Code versioning tools (GIT, SVN, etc)
    • Scripting languages or programming frameworks (Bash, Python, Java, etc)
    • Current industry standards and best practices
  • Non-technical:
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team
    • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills
    • Open minded, willing to share knowledge and learn new skills
  • Experience of the following would be useful but is not essential:
    • System admin and tuning of Linux based servers
    • Containerisation (Docker/ Kubernetes)
    • Elasticsearch administration and/or development
    • Experience of supporting high transactional and/or financial systems
